Capsaicin is the active component of chilli pepper, plant of the genus Capsicum. It interacts with transient receptor potential vanilloid subfamily member 1 (TRPV1), a receptor found in key sensory afferents.
Because of its ability to evoke the initial neuronal
excitation followed by a long-lasting refractory period, it is considered a treatment option in various conditions, such as neuropathic pain. The objective of this paper was to assess the role of capsaicin in rhinologic disorders, including nonallergic rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis. We reviewed latest studies on capsaicin mechanisms of action and its utility as a therapeutic agent. A beneficial role of capsaicin has been reported in idiopathic nonallergic rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. However, limited data are insufficient to fully understand and assess the effectiveness of capsaicin in studied conditions.
