Abstract:

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Oncological Laryngology in Zabrze Medical University of Silesia In Katowice has been established in 1950. The first head of department was Professor T. Ceypek, next Professor w. Kuśnierczyk, Professor k. Szymczyk, Professor G. Namysłowski and now Professor M. Misiołek. The doctor’s staff consists of 20 people. They are very well educated and trained in otorhinolaryngology.
There are performed about 1800 operations per year. Rhinosurgery – all endoscopic procedures, also with use of navigation in chronic sinusitis, neoplasms and the diseases of the tear ducts. Head nad neck oncology – advanced laryngetomies (total, supracricoid) and partial ones from external approach and endoscopic procedures with use of the CO2 laser. Pharyngeal operations with eventual reconstructions. Parotid operations due to the tumors – a wide spectrum of these operations. Many procedures in narrowing of the glotis and subglottal area – laser arytenoidectomy with posterior cordectomy, vocal cord laterofixation, laser widening with the use of jet ventilation, Rhethi II reconstruction etc. The vocal fold augmentations and Wendler’s procedures are performed, as well.
The close cooperation was undertaken in scientific research with many centers all over the world and in Poland. The result of it is many valuable publications that are citated widely. Many employees from Department from Zabrze held honorable positions in numerous organizations: Polish Otorhinolaryngological Head and Neck Surgery Society, European Laryngological Society.
