Abstract:

The professional and scientific paths of Władysław Szymonowicz (1869–1939), a professor of histology and embryology at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lvov, the author of numerous pioneering scientific works in these fields, including the subject of nerve endings in human and animal skin, and many others, are presented. He determined the secretory character of the adrenal glands, extracted adrenaline from the adrenal glands, determined its effect on the human organism. Together with Napoleon Nikodem Cybulski (1854–1919), Edward Sharpey-Schäfer (1850–1935) and George Oliver (1841–1915), he entered the annals of world medicine. He was the author of „The textbook of histology and microscopic anatomy”, which was published twelve times in five languages, for the first time in 1901. He practiced as an otolaryngologist in the health resort of Krynica.
